Harry Otis Nutting III, a resident of Manchester, Vermont, died on October 14 at the age of 92.
Harry was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania to Harry Otis Nutting Jr. and Marion Heminway Nutting, and grew up in Lebanon and Syracuse, New York.
He attended Dartmouth College, where he joined Phi Delta Theta, his father’s fraternity, and NROTC. He was a lifelong cheerleader for the college and his fraternity. After college he served as an officer and fighter pilot in the Navy, flying off aircraft carriers in the Pacific. He later became a salesman for IBM but decided against corporate life and moved to Florida to pursue his passion for outdoor sports: marathon running, swimming, tennis, and more than anything, sailing. He owned several sailboats and undertook a number of open-water voyages.
Harry moved to southern Vermont in early old age to be near his late sister, May Bigelow. He spent his days woodworking, volunteering at an animal rescue shelter, the Habitat ReStore and tending an evaporator pan with Sugar Bob in sugaring season. Throughout his life Harry held onto his youthful joy. Most recently he entertained friends and family with his monthly limericks. He was well known and liked in town and often included his friends in his limericks.
Harry leaves behind a sister, Nancy Nutting Lane, and seven nieces and nephews who will always remember him as the cool uncle.
He asked to be remembered as a poet, an adventurer and a philanthropist.
Harry will be buried beside his parents in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
